Cooking a steak isn't that difficult, right? It shouldn't be unless you're an adult like me who thinks using the microwave is cooking. I decided to take on the challenge of cooking a steak for a project in my Grad School program. This project aims to use resources such as social media, affinity spaces like Reddit, videos, and help forums only to learn a new skill. "The ability to recognize the limits of one's current knowledge, then take steps to remedy the situation, is essential for learners of all ages" (Bransford et al., 2000, p.47). I recognized my knowledge of cooking steak was very limited, and I had to start with the basics.
The research I did before trying to cook a steak for the first time included looking at groups like Steak tips and tricks on Facebook and their Instagram account Steak Tips. There were myriads of resources, comments, and information available. Still, it wasn't easy to wade through due to the volume of data. The most helpful resources I found were videos on YouTube, as I could watch what the cook was doing and hear them explain their process.
My first attempt at cooking a steak went well, thanks to a video from Gordon Ramsey and this video from Chef Keoni by Foodland Hawaii. After cooking the steak, I determined that I needed to season my steak more and wanted to try a thicker cut of meat to get a better crust on the steak. Practicing cooking a steak, reviewing what I did well, and identifying the gaps in my knowledge will help positively impact my learning (Ericsson et al., 1993, as cited in Bransford et al., 2000).
