For my grad program, I took on the challenge of using only digital resources like social media, help forums, videos, and affinity spaces like Reddit to learn how to cook a steak. In my previous blog post about the challenge, I discussed my first attempt at cooking after finding a few resources that provided helpful information.
After that first attempt, I wanted to try a different technique for cooking the steak, so I found a help forum on Quora called How To Cook a Steak Indoors. I followed the instructions, but the steak ended up a bit overcooked. The instructions in the forum were straightforward, but the post didn't include photos or videos, and I realized that, although there were step-by-step instructions included, I prefer pictures and videos when learning a skill like this.
Basting a steak.
Since my second attempt at cooking steak didn't end with it cooked to my liking, I asked myself some questions such as "what went well?", "what went wrong?" and "what should I do differently next time?". By questioning myself after this experience, I demonstrated an active learning technique called metacognition, or thinking about my thinking (Bransford et al., 2000, p. 12). By asking myself these questions, I identified what additional information I needed to be successful at cooking a steak and the techniques I should stop and continue using.
Before my third attempt, I found a helpful video by Adam Ragusea that provided additional tips on determining when the steak is medium rare. I applied his technique of testing the firmness of the steak while raw and continually comparing the firmness to determine doneness (7:30). My third steak was a success, but I still haven't mastered getting a crust on the steak. I'll head back to my networked resources and try again. Stay tuned...
